WoW: Forever dungeons and raids: bosses and mechanics

There are 35 dungeon instances at launch, 9 of them new, and three raids arriving on December 9. This guide puts it all on one page: what changed in the rules, the quests to grab before you go in, what each boss does and how to handle it. The new dungeons that went through beta get a full guide; the rest still depend on launch, and we flag whatever isn't confirmed.

Updated October 31, 2026

What changed in dungeons

WoW: Forever launches on November 4, 2026 with levels 1 to 60 and 35 dungeon instances: the 20 Classic dungeons (26 if you count wings such as Scarlet Monastery's four separately) plus 9 new ones. Before you zone into any of them, here's what changed in the rules:

  • One difficulty only. No Heroic, no Mythic. Each dungeon has one version, and that's the one you'll farm.
  • 5-player groups in the new dungeons, per Blizzard.
  • Group finder without teleports. The tool lists groups, but it doesn't match you automatically or port anyone to the door. Meeting stones don't summon either. Either the group walks there or a warlock summons (with two other players on site).
  • Cap of 5 resets per hour. To reset, everyone leaves the instance and the leader resets from the character frame.
  • XP comes from quests. Mob kills give little; most XP sits in the dungeon quests, which pay out only once. During beta, on October 8, Blizzard raised dungeon mob XP by about 20%, but the lesson stands: grab every quest before you go in.
  • New loot. Hundreds of new items were added to old and new dungeons, with themed stats (class or spec, biome, enemy type). Several old items gained effects, and some Classic sets gained 2, 3, 4 and 5-piece bonuses.
  • Transmog for everyone. Every drop unlocks its appearance for each group member who could use it.
  • Currency and Legacy. Dungeons drop Tarnished Undermine Real. The Novice, Experienced and Master Spelunker achievements (killing specific final bosses) award Legacy Points.
  • Bosses hit harder in at least some original dungeons (see Deadmines and Wailing Caverns), and evading mobs chase you further.

Before you call the group, open the map and check the dungeon's quests for your faction. A run without them gives far less XP than the same run with them.

Every dungeon by level

Level ranges from Blizzard and Warcraft Tavern for Forever. Other guides list slightly different ranges for some original dungeons, so treat these as a guide, not a rule.

Hall of Thanes (13-18)

New The Alliance's first new dungeon, under Ironforge. Beta data.

Entrance

From Ironforge's throne room (High Seat), take the webbed passage on the left (around 43.5, 52.0) and go down through Old Ironforge to the portal (around 27.8, 47.9). It was built for the Alliance: Horde players face a long trip and a corpse run past the guards.

Quests to grab first

  • Alliance A Visitor to Dun Morogh (Beldin Steelgrill, Kharanos).
  • Alliance Earthseer Farsen's chain: Farsen's Watch, Nip 'Em in the Bud, Underground Map and Old Ironforge Incursion (bring Durgen's head to Magni).
  • Alliance The Restless Dead (Afadra Dunwall, Ironforge).
  • Alliance The Treaty of Understanding (tablet in the final vault).
  • Both factions: An Ancient Grudge (Ghostly Attendant, inside) and Important Heirlooms (Thom Filch, entrance bridge).

Faldrim Anvilmar

  • Patrols the hall. Clear one side first and pull him on his own.
  • Mind Blast and Anvilmar's Curse: the tank loses 20% attack and casting speed for 10 minutes. Decurse it.
  • Loot: Spiritwraith Drape, Aetherwisp Bracers.

Magmatus

  • Kill the Dark Iron Summoner first; while he lives, Fiery Assistants keep spawning.
  • Fire Nova reaches 10 yards: ranged and the healer stay out of it.
  • Combust burns a random target for 12 seconds and can be dispelled.
  • Loot: Fang of Magmatus, Flamefist Grips.

Plunder

  • A golem. Knock Away causes most wipes: the tank keeps their back to a wall.
  • Charge stuns. Crush Armor stacks up to 5; use a tank cooldown at high stacks.
  • Loot: Golemheart Stave, Golemguard Chest.

Durgen Dirgehammer (final boss)

  • Comes with 2 Lesser Stone Golems. Crowd-control the golems and kill them one at a time.
  • Kill the Looters along the walls first: Intimidating Shout fears players straight into them.
  • Rend on the tank: keep the heals rolling.
  • Afterwards, loot his head and open the vaults. Loot: Durgen's Crescent Axe, Robes of the Disgraced Thane.

The Dark Iron packs on the way are more dangerous than the bosses. Pull small.

Ruins of Lordaeron (15-20)

New The Horde's new dungeon, in the ruins of the old capital. Beta data.

Entrance

In Tirisfal, in the Lordaeron courtyard just past the main gate, on the left (around 63.1, 67.5). Horde gets 10 quests; Alliance gets 5 and has to come via Southshore and swim across Lordamere Lake, getting PvP-flagged on the way. Level 16 or 17 makes the run comfortable.

Quests to grab first

  • Horde The Wrath of Rath'mael (Deathguard Kristof).
  • Horde A Frightened Request (Tabitha Heartweaver, Silverpine).
  • Horde Light's Justice (Morbin Lightbane, Undercity) and The New Plague (Theodore Griffs, Undercity).
  • Horde The Unending Torment chain, which starts from the Abominable Head The Baron drops.
  • Alliance Abominable Creatures (Captain Truman, inside), Bloodied Insignia, Crest of Lordaeron and Remember That I Love You.

The Baron

  • An abomination. Knockout knocks the tank back and stuns them for 6 seconds: keep the tank topped with their back to a wall, and re-taunt when they're back.
  • Trample hits everyone in melee.
  • Loot: Meathook Slicer and the Abominable Head (Horde chain).

Witherfang

  • A spider. Leech Poison drains the tank and heals the boss: cleanse it.
  • Clear the spiders on its patrol path before you pull.
  • Loot: Witherbite Bracers and Highly Toxic Strain (quest item).

The Abandoned

  • A wave event: 3 undead waves, then the boss, with no time to drink in between.
  • Frost Nova roots: ranged stay back.
  • Interrupt Life Drain.
  • Loot: Scepter of the Abandoned, Grip of Fear.

Bjork

  • Anti-Magic Shield makes him immune to magic for 3 seconds: casters pause.
  • Mighty Blow knocks back.
  • Loot: Corpse Chopper.

Viktor the Vile (hidden event)

  • Light the chimney fire in the burned house to start it.
  • Survive about 5 waves; the last one brings a Flesh Golem.
  • Then cleanse the Leech Poison he applies.
  • Loot: Vileblood Scimitar.

Rath'mael (final boss)

  • A necromancer. Flamestrike has a 3-second cast and lands where the tank stood: the tank moves and the group follows to the same side every time.
  • Flamestrike can be interrupted or stunned.
  • Fire Shield punishes melee.
  • Loot: Mirror of Rath'mael, Coldspire Staff.

Horde-only rare: Lordaeron Captain, which can drop the Haunting Blade.

Rath'mael is a positioning fight. Agree beforehand which side everyone moves to on each Flamestrike.

Excavation Site: Wetlands (24-29)

New A dungeon for both factions in the Wetlands. In beta it ran at 26-31; the launch listing is 24-29.

Entrance

A portal on the hill southeast of Whelgar's Excavation (around 47.8, 56.3). The easiest approach is from the Thelgen Rock meeting stone.

Quests to grab first

  • Alliance 9 quests: Highland Hides; Seeking Caitlin, leading to Lost in the Thicket Things and Heartwoven; Songblade Search, leading to Fallen in the Fen; Horrors in the Highland; Prehistoric Prism; Lost Relic Carry.
  • Horde 5 quests: Changing Tastes, Dragonmaw Rumors, Open the Maw, Elder Knowledge, Earthen Echo.

Saltspine

  • A crocolisk. Clear the water adds first.
  • Tendon Rip slows the tank: tank him in place.
  • Dust Storm (10 yards) lowers hit chance: ranged stay out of it.
  • Loot: Glinteye Slippers.

Shadetooth

  • A raptor, and the most common wipe in this dungeon.
  • Crowd-control or kill his 2 elite Thicket Hunters. Their Infected Wound increases damage taken.
  • Terrifying Roar fears players into the tall grass, where they pull more raptors: fight on the open beach.
  • He enrages at 30%: save a cooldown or burst for it.
  • Loot: Raptorclaw Greaves, Raptor's Gaze.

Highland Horror

  • A bog elemental. Drops the Horrible Rootcore (quest item).
  • Tactics not published yet.

Relic Guardian (final boss)

  • A level 31 Titan construct. Click the Archival Panel to start.
  • Thunderclap (10 yards) slows: ranged stay out.
  • Knocks the tank back and stuns for 5 seconds: DPS ease off briefly until the tank is back.
  • Loot: Ring of Power Regulation, Golemsight Long Gun.

City of Dalaran (28-33)

New The only new dungeon with an attunement: without the key, the group doesn't get in.

Entrance and attunement

  • The sewer gate in Alterac Mountains, northwest of Southshore (around 8.8, 59.6). The Image of Archmage Modera stands outside.
  • You need the Sewer Key from Modera. One key holder can open the gate for the whole group.
  • There's no flight path there: fly to Southshore (Alliance) or Tarren Mill (Horde). The key quests need level 30.
  • Alliance starts with An Alarming Request (Emissary Jacques, Southshore).
  • Horde starts with Key to the City and Prison Break-In (Magus Wordeen Voidglare, Tarren Mill).
  • Both factions then do Heart of Disruption with Modera.
  • Other quests: Starving Arcane (takes several runs), Power Overwhelming, A Green Sample, The Grave Knight, Source of Power and Opportunistic Education.

Layout

Atrexis, in the sewers, always comes first. The other 6 bosses can be done in any order, and Lyn is a summoned rare.

Atrexis the Grave Knight

  • Kill the Raise Dead skeletons.
  • Disarm on the tank.
  • Use a tank cooldown during Unholy Frenzy.
  • Loot: Bonebinder's Signet.

Arcane Anomaly

  • Focal Blast is a sweeping beam: keep moving ahead of it and stay inside the platform circle.
  • Loot: Runemender's Seal.

Mana Devourer

  • Clear the garden first.
  • Debilitate drains mana: everyone starts at full mana.
  • Immune to Arcane.
  • Loot: Spine of the Devourer.

Fel Ancient

  • Entangle roots 2 players and Fel Timbers leaves poison fumes on the ground. Don't get rooted inside them: use Freedom or Escape Artist.
  • Loot: Felbough Arm.

Unstable Sentinel

  • Kill the Angry Tomes first.
  • Malfunction has a 2-second windup, then wide arcane pulses: melee step out and ranged stay at max range.
  • Loot: Guardian's Dualblade.

  • Dispel Manamorph (a polymorph-style effect).
  • Silence lasts 10 seconds: the healer stays far away.

Lyn the Ignored (summoned rare)

  • Summoned with the Tome of Dalaran.
  • Shadow Bolt Volley hits the whole group: group heals.
  • Decurse Curse of Thorns from your melee.
  • Loot: Tendonscraper Dagger.

The Violet Sorcerer's Vestments set tied to Dalaran is only partly known so far.

The 5 new dungeons without published mechanics

Beta was capped at level 30. Nothing above level 33 was ever playable there, so no tested boss guide exists yet for these five. Mechanics have not been published yet; below is what's known about entrances, themes and names. Expect updates in the first days after November 4.

The Drowned City (35-40)

  • Underwater entrance near Gillijim's Isle, west of Grom'gol in Stranglethorn. The exact spot isn't known yet. Alliance flies to Booty Bay; Horde to Grom'gol or Booty Bay.
  • An open-air sunken troll city with trolls and naga. The weather turns stormy before the final boss.
  • Known quest item: Voodoo-Infused Artifact, from Saltseer Manhunters.

Boss names from the BlizzCon demo, unconfirmed and in an order that may change: Zul'Alai, Var'Taka (also reported as Zin'aka), Captain Dreadrise, Deathless Marrow (with a Primeval Elemental), Gill and Min'loth the Serpent as the final boss.

Krol'dok Stronghold (40-45)

  • Northern Riverglades, under the Badlands cliffs, next to the ogre town of Bolder'ok (around 48.4, 25.9). The exact portal isn't known. Horde flies to Rog'mar; Alliance to Powderfuse Port or Farholde Keep.
  • An ogre fortress, with the Twilight's Hammer per BlizzCon, where ogres kidnap travelers.
  • There's a 5-piece Krol'dok Battlegear set. Quests, loot and mechanics: nothing published.

Only known boss: Overlord Mugg, and only from datamining.

Alcaz Prison (48-53)

  • Swim over from Theramore (Alliance) or Brackenwall (Horde) in Dustwallow Marsh.
  • Theme: the Defias Brotherhood against the naga.

Unconfirmed: the entrance is probably the new stone building at the north end of Alcaz Island (around 75.0, 14.7); the only boss mentioned is Blazeroar, likely the final one; rumors say King Varian Wrynn is among the prisoners.

Blackmaw Hold (55-60)

  • Northern Azshara, a new tunnel under Darkwhisper Gorge (around 38.6, 33.2), behind the furbolg gates. Alliance flies to Talrendis Point; Horde to Valormok.
  • A large furbolg city with several routes, several bosses and a "deeper path". It's also one of the 3 entrances to the Barrow Deeps raid.

Only known boss: Varrox Bleakhoof, from datamining. It reportedly unlocks a quest chain, with no details yet.

Shaper's Terrace (58-60)

  • Northern rim of Un'Goro, just north of Marshal's Refuge (flight path for both factions).
  • A Titan facility with dinosaurs and tar pits. Collect the power crystals around Un'Goro before going in: you use them at consoles inside.
  • Meant as a pre-raid gear farm.

Boss names from the beta client, unconfirmed: Nanaya (final), Cinder, Bolt and Snowtalon.

Classic dungeons: levels 13 to 30

Original dungeons keep their layout and boss order, but loot was rebuilt and some bosses hit much harder. Wherever there's no Forever tag, the mechanics come from original Classic.

Ragefire Chasm (13-18), Orgrimmar

In the Cleft of Shadow. Built for the Horde; Alliance can't realistically get there. Quests: Testing an Enemy's Strength, The Power to Destroy..., Searching for the Lost Satchel and Hidden Enemies (Thrall's chain).

  • Oggleflint and Taragaman the Hungerer: Taragaman uses Fire Nova and Uppercut, so ranged keep their distance.
  • Jergosh the Invoker: remove Curse of Weakness and interrupt Immolate.
  • Bazzalan: applies poison; cure it.

Original Classic mechanics; may have changed in Forever.

Wailing Caverns (17-24), The Barrens

Entrance in the cave below the Lushwater Oasis hill. Quests: Deviate Hides, Smart Drinks, Trouble at the Docks, Deviate Eradication, The Glowing Shard and, for Horde, Leaders of the Fang and Serpentbloom.

Forever Bosses keep their Classic abilities, but some hit much harder. Four new rares were added (Snake Eye Kaleidoscope, Cloak of Hermitic Bliss, Slither Cord and Skum's Bucket), and the Embrace of the Viper set gained 2 to 5-piece bonuses: at 4, a heal when you're low; at 5, a chance to stun.

  • Druids of the Fang (Cobrahn, Anacondra, Pythas, Serpentis): interrupt Sleep and Healing Touch. Cobrahn turns into a snake; dispel his poison.
  • Kresh and Skum: tank and spank. Skum's Chained Bolt hits players standing close.
  • Verdan the Everliving: knocks back; tank him against a wall.
  • Mutanus the Devourer: appears after the Disciple escort if all 4 Fang leaders are dead. Interrupt Naralex's Nightmare (a sleep) and watch out for Thundercrack.

One guide puts Mutanus' Thundercrack at about 475 Nature damage in Forever. That number comes from a single source.

The Deadmines (15-22), Westfall

In Moonbrook. All 8 quests are Alliance (Horde can still run it from Westfall). Start with The Defias Brotherhood from Gryan Stoutmantle at Sentinel Hill. Forever New quest: Destruction in Deadmines (Alba Fairmoon), where you plant explosives at the goblin forge. The dungeon is darker now, and evading mobs chase.

  • Rhahk'Zor Forever: Slam now hits for about 330 with a 3-second stun (Classic was about 64-86). Keep the tank topped. New loot: Ogre Loincloth; Rockslicer now gathers ore without Mining.
  • Sneed's Shredder / Sneed: break the Shredder and Sneed jumps out. New loot: Bandsaw Wristbands, Dull Sawblade.
  • Gilnid: a Goblin Engineer summons a golem; kill the engineers. Smelting Pants now smelt 25% faster.
  • Mr. Smite Forever: Slam for about 220 plus a stun. Smite Stomp stuns the group at 66% and 33%, and he swaps weapons. Thief's Blade gained a pickpocketing bonus.
  • Captain Greenskin Forever: Poisoned Harpoon deals about 132 damage plus 198 Nature every 10 seconds for 60 seconds. Dispel it.
  • Edwin VanCleef: calls 2 Blackguards at low health; save crowd control and burst.
  • Cookie: Lookie's Spyglass, a new trinket.

The Defias Leather set was rebuilt with new bonuses.

Rhahk'Zor is the first boss and can already kill an undergeared tank. Pull with the tank at full health and the healer ready from the first second.

  • Under Mount Hyjal, in Illidan Stormrage's old prison. A night elf and corruption theme, with several paths.
  • It has 3 entrances: Mount Hyjal, Winterspring and the Blackmaw Hold dungeon.
  • No attunement announced.
  • Blizzard confirms 8 bosses. Mechanics, strategy and required resistances haven't been published; the raid wasn't in beta.

Boss names from Legacy challenge data, unconfirmed: Deepscar Matriarch, Elder Tangleclaw, Khalith the Dreadspinner, Well of Sorrow, Amethrax, Del'lynar Songwood, Ravus and Darlissa (a council) and Sonya Darkhallow, likely the final boss.

Hyjal Summit (20 players)

  • At the top of Mount Hyjal, near Nordrassil. Mount Hyjal is one of Forever's new zones.
  • This isn't The Burning Crusade's Battle for Mount Hyjal, the wave-defense raid against Archimonde. It's a new raid in ancient elven ruins, with fel corruption from Archimonde's era.
  • It opens with an ancient guardian, then splits into several paths above and below ground before the final bosses. Method compares it to Karazhan and expects two-night clears.
  • Blizzard confirms 13 bosses and teases a legendary.
  • No attunement announced. Mechanics and resistances not published.

Datamined boss names, unconfirmed: Bandalar, Ancient of Decay, Time-Lost Battalion, Sylvestris Dusksong, Old Gloomlurker, Gharalis the Abyssal, Kathris the Haunted, Anara Chillwind, Elder Minderel, Tracker Stillwind, Council of Thorns, Nythus the Dreambound and The Wild King, likely the final boss.

Onyxia's Lair (40 players)

  • In the Wyrmbog, southern Dustwallow Marsh. Level 60, 40 players, weekly reset.
  • Forever The Drakefire Amulet has to be in your bags; you don't need to equip it.
  • The attunement is not account-wide at launch: every character does its own.
  • Blizzard recommends building Fire Resistance. It describes the encounter as three phases, lots of fire and a fight that moves around the raid.

Onyxia's rewards are reportedly expected to change, unconfirmed and with no details yet. The Classic items (Head of Onyxia, tier 2 helm tokens, Ancient Cornerstone Grimoire, Onyxia Hide Backpack) may not be the same.

Alliance attunement

  • Dragonkin Menace (Helendis Riverhorn, Burning Steppes)

Horde attunement

Both chains run through Blackrock Depths and both halves of Blackrock Spire. Organize guild groups that cover everyone's steps in the same run, since Angerforge, Argelmach, Rend and Drakkisath show up on several lists.

Onyxia strategy (Classic base)

Original Classic mechanics; may have changed in Forever.

Phase 1 (100% to 65%)

  • The main tank holds Onyxia facing the back wall, with the raid along her sides.
  • Flame Breath is a frontal cone; Tail Sweep hits anyone behind her. Wing Buffet and Cleave round out the phase.
  • DPS waits for the tank to build threat, and healers focus the tank.

Phase 2 (65% to 40%)

  • She takes off. Fireballs land on random players: stay spread.
  • Deep Breath sweeps the room in a straight line from where she's facing, for very high fire damage. Run to the sides and use Fire Resistance and fire protection potions.
  • Onyxian Whelps pour out of the side caves: assign AoE classes and an off-tank to them.
  • Ranged DPS hits her while she's in the air.

Phase 3 (40% to 0%)

  • She lands. Bellowing Roar fears the whole raid at intervals, and anyone feared onto the lava cracks takes fire damage (in Classic, the floor erupts).
  • Put Fear Ward and Tremor Totem on the tank; warriors stance-dance for Berserker Rage.
  • The tank has to regain threat quickly after she lands.

Fire resistance and consumables

  • Greater Fire Protection Potion for Phases 2 and 3.
  • Fire Resistance gear or buffs, as Blizzard recommends.
  • Fear Ward and Tremor Totem for Phase 3.

What about the Classic raids?

Molten Core, Blackwing Lair, Zul'Gurub, both Ahn'Qiraj raids and Naxxramas aren't in Forever at launch or in the December 9 tier, and none has a date. The only confirmed slot for a returning Classic raid is the revamped "iconic" raid planned for summer 2027, which hasn't been named.
